Blessings Darlings!
Oh, goody - it's "Lammas". Lammas it the neopagan holiday that demonstrates exactly how EXTREMELY cut off from earth/agricultural reality so very many American neopagans are. (I can't speak for neopagans in other countries - my expertise (I was an agriculture major) is in US agriculture.)
The winter wheat harvest ended at least a month ago. It's WAY too late to be celebrating that. Spare me the "Loafmas" references thinking that they mean loaves of wheat bread. They don't mean loaves of ANY bread - the root of Lammas isn't 'loaf' of bread, it relates more to "Lord" as in "Lord of the manor' that the serfs worked on. It's about the 1%, darlings.
Barley harvest? Nope. That's just underway. It won't end for a couple more weeks. And no farmer is stupid enough to leave the fields during the harvest to have a harvest celebration. So spare me the singing of "John Barleycorn".
Spring wheat? The harvest for that doesn't start for a few more weeks.
If you want to say that you are following a 'nature based religion', wouldn't it be nice to ... actually pay attention to nature? Especially nature in, like, your local area? Find out when your closest few county fairs are, or 4-H fairs. THEY will be timed for between the local harvests. They MAY feature newly harvested local foods = or not. But at least you'll get the timing better.
Me - I'm going to the racetrack and participating in politics for Lughnasadh. Some of you know why this is way the heck more traditional than baking a loaf of bread. Especially from store bought flour that is undoubtedly over a year old.

Cool!
Blessings Darlings!
This past week - the first week of May - temperatures here were around 90 every day and the humidity starting going up, up, up. So now that a cool front has moved in and temperatures are barely 70, I'm catching up - and trying to get a head of - cooking.
Since I bake most of our breads, that means two or more loaves of bread a week plus some rolls. After breakfast this morning we were down to 4 rolls and two slices of bread left. So now I've got two new loaves of bread in the oven. Bialys will wait for another day.
I also have been working on the alchemy of changing 1.5 cubic feet of frozen bones into stock. That, too, involves the oven. Ovens, actually - the 'regular' oven for roasting the bones and then the hay box oven for simmering the soup. I'm about half way done with batches of stock, and will be continuing that this week.
Because, as you know, summer follows spring. And I won't want to turn on the oven then. I wish I could fill the freezer with more baked goods .... but I've got it so filled with sale-priced meat that there's no room. I'll have SOME more room when the bones are replaced by stock, but loaves of bread a BIG suckers.
Yeah. First world problems again. I justify it by saying it's about using everything that come into the house down to the last bit. But it still comes down to too much stuff coming into the house.

Gritty Reality
Blessings Darlings!
To continue on the grain theme from yesterday ... I've been grinding my own flour again, now that it's cool and I'm doing a lot of baking again. I don't bake 100% whole grain bread, for the record, because my family isn't fond of it. Over time I'm raising the percentage of whole grains, but that's going to be a LONG LONG slog.
But since I am grinding and sifting and making corn meal mush and frying polenta and all, I ended up with a jar of ... well, *I* called the stuff corn grits, but in reality it was mostly husks. Beingcheap frugal, yesterday I figured I'd see if they WOULD cook up into grits.
The answer was ... not exactly. Too many flakes of husk. But ATSHTF, I'm sure we'd eat them happily. They weren't AWFUL. But we're not going to eat them until then.
Unless....
Okay, I'll probably try them mixed into a loaf of white bread and see what happens next. Shhhh. Don't tell my family. Let's keep it a secret.

Busy Kitchen!
Blessings, Darlings!
I'm busy in the kitchen today, making soup and bread and probably cookies or cake.
HOWEVER - I'm changing the day I post foodie stuff to Tuesday, since everyone seems to be too busy on Mondays to read anything. Not sure what I'll post on Monday, of course.
