Hi Fronds!
It's pretty much summer here. Temperature got up to a toasty 89 degrees today, and the humidity is currently at 83%.
I do not find this comfortable. I never DID find heat and humidity comfortable, so I can't blame it on me being a woman of a certain age. Therefore, one of my main goals is keeping the house cool.
But how to do this when I cook darn near everything from scratch? Like the soup and the corn bread I made today?
This is where having a summer kitchen comes in - cooking away from the main house, so you don't add heat to where you don't want it.
BACK IN THE DAY
Having a summer kitchen goes way back. It was standard for mansions back when the USA started. A trip to Mt. Vernon (which is a great place to visit for SO many reasons!) includes a tour of the detached kitchen there. That kitchen features a covered walkway to the house. Mine is not that fancy.
My kitchen appears under the maple tree out back. The shade is good there, even if the breeze is sometimes blocked by a neighbor's fence.
The standard parts of the kitchen are one aluminum folding table, one comfortable chair, the rocket stove, the BBQ grill/smoker, the hay box cooker, an extension cord, and any electric appliance I may need. Maybe the toaster oven. Maybe a one burner electric hotplate. I may have the day's ingredients out there in a cooler, too.
And, of course, a cold drink is part of the set up. Maybe an entire pitcher of cold drinks.
Benefits Of Summer Kitchen Cooking
The official benefit, of course, is having cooked food and not heating the house. But being outside is a benefit in general. (I'm thinking of going an entire week of outdoor living sometime soon, coming in only to hit the washroom, but that pagan and survivalist experiment will wait until later - I can still work out there on the laptop, at least.)
And the back yard comes with it's own floor show! Well, floor might not be the best word - birds are all around, the world's fattest squirrel thinks s/he owns the yard, the chipmunks are alway fun, and once we had a huge possum come sniffing around.
Our previous house also had the chickens a neighbor family kept for a few years, and their occassionally escaping bunny, several visiting cats, and a much smaller possum.
If the mosquitos get bad this year, I'm considing adding a screen house that I picked up at a garage sale to the kitchen set up. I certainly will use that if I spend a week outside camping.
Come away with me, darlings, to the Great Suburban Outdoors!

Do the Gods Have Your Back?
Blessings, Darlings!
Late last night I decided I had been WAY WAY too PC in talking about intimacy with the God/dess/es. "Oh, I want to manifest them" "Oh, I want to hear their voices".
Let me be more honest about what those vague statements really mean.
I want access to the God/dess/es POWER, KNOWLEDGE, STRENGTH, WISDOM, LOVE, BLESSINGS, HEALING, UNDERSTANDING, MIGHT, MERCY, SPENDOR, VICTORY, ETC.
I want the God/dess/es to have my back - I want them in my corner - I want to be able to kick ass when it needs to be kicked, to know when it is time to kick ass, to know how best to kick any individual ass. That includes kicking my own ass (so I guess flexibility/gymnastic ability should be added to that list).
And in my never humble opinion, those are things you only get from the God/dess/es when you are intimate with Them. You and They have to be intimate enough for y'all to recognize each other's backs to order to cover each other's backs. You need to be intimate with the power, knowledge, etc, of any individual God or Goddess to know when you're getting that God/dess/'s power, knowledge, whatever.
Not to mention (but, clearly, I'm going to mention) if you need help from any Divine One in a hurry, you don't want to have to go thru' layers of bureaucracy. You want the direct cell phone number of the Divine One. They don't give that out to just anyone. Like all busy executives They have Their secretaries/staff handle all low level stuff. You don't get the Real Deal unless you have beein in contact for rather a while.
Ivo Dominguez, Jr., has an analogy for this - well, he really used it for aspecting, but I'm going to use it here. Say that the Dali Llama was in town. You drop him a note inviting him to dinner. Is he going to show up? Well, it depends on your relationship with him. If it's just you or me, no. If we have had a little bit of contact with him in the past we might get a note of thanks for the offer back from a secretary. More contact, and the note might be from him. If we or our office has had some level of relationship with him established, maybe one of his representatives will meet with us. Only if we have a pretty darn tight relationship would he be coming over for dinner.
So, too, with the God/dess/es. If you want the Power and Understanding (I'm in the midst of more Kabala stuff), you have to put in the time and effort and build the relationship to intimacy. Then, when you need to do emergency first aid or EMT care and you need the wisdom and skills of Asclepios you will get it fast and sure.
I admit I want the power/knowledge/etc. Sure, my ego is involved. I don't think that what I'm after is bad, I don't think that ego is bad. In fact, I'm pretty sure that powerlessness, lack of understanding, etc, are pretty bad.
And THAT is what I really mean when I said "I want to manifest the God/dess/es more clearly in my life".

INTIMACY WITH THE GODS
Blessings, Darlings!
I'm on fairly good terms with several Goddesses and Gods. I occassionally hear Their voices, sense Their energies, and They usually send a bit of Their power to some of my rituals and magical workings I don't have this with many of the Goddesses and Gods, just a select few - and I didn't sellect all of those few, some - maybe all - selected me.
But I am not as intimate with any of Them as I would like to be. I'd like to hear Their voices more, learn more from Them, manifest Their purposes in my life more.
WHAT IS INTIMACY?
Familiarity is a large part of it - sort of the 'putting the name to the face' part of intimacy. Looking at the definition of intimacy I see "a close, familiar, and usually affectionate or loving personal relationshipo with another; a close associatoin with or detailed knowledge of a subject; an epression serving as a token of familiarity, affection or the like; etc." I'd say it's close to the 'knowing' aspect of the Kabalistic sphere of Binah.
WHY WANT INTIMACY WITH THE GODDESSES AND GODS?
Why would you want intimacy with the Divine Ones? That, of course, will depend a lot on your spiritual views, or why you are working with magick or the occult. For me, I feel that I'm here to help manifest the Divine - I'm kin to the Gods, I am Their hands on this plane. The hands really ought to know what they are supposed to be doing!
Okay, that's the egotistical but altruistic reason. I also just crave to be that close to the Divine Ones. I want to hear their voices more often and more distinctly, to feel them more powerfully in my own life.
HOW INTIMATE CAN WE BE WITH THEM?
Clearly we are not in a position to fully 'get' the Goddesses and Gods. We aren't that spiritually developed - maybe only another God or Goddess can fully get another God or Goddess. We just aren't that big, and they ARE that big. I just have the conviction that I'm not as intimate with any of them as I can be.
ARE THERE WAYS TO GET MORE INTIMATE?
To quote someone or other, Yes we can. All spiritual disciplines, everywhere, are ways to become more intimate with the Gods and Goddesses or the more amorphous 'Divine'. Whether it is the Kabalist washing himself following the path of the lightning bolt, the Christian in prayer, the neopagan in ritual, whatever - there's an app for that. Actually, in every spiritual discipline, there are a whole raft of apps for that!
The fact that others have blazed this trail before us is important and helpful. Their work has left its mark on the spiritual landscape. The can'dles they've lit light the path before us, and our work allows us to see that while lighting the way for others after us.
I'm setting off to build more intimacy with my Patron. How about you? Coming along?

Yogurt making
NEWS FLASH - MONEY IS TIGHT
Okay, no 'news' in that news, is there? One of the distributors of our (home business) product has been slow in paying us at the same time we've been doing more 'prep for future' than 'immediately paying work'. We knew that our choices would reduce income for a while, so it's okay.
But it means that I'm doing even more cooking from scratch, at the same time that my husband wants to buy more goodies at the local Farmers Market. We're compromising - he gets to buy 1 loaf of artesian bread (UpTown Bakers rock!) but we have to make cookies/muffins/etc at home, as well as the rest of our bread.
Today I'm baking a lovely loaf of bread and some blackberry muffins. But I don't have all the ingredients that the muffin recipe calls for!
FLEXIBILITY & SUBSTITUTION
Actually, the husband and spawn want blueberry muffins, but I have blackberries, not blueberries, in the freezer to use up. So that's substitution #1.
Substitution # 2 is for some of the 1 1/2 cups of plain yogurt that the recipe calls for. I don't have that much. If I had planned ahead (as I SHOULD have) I'd have made more yogurt by now. Instead, I've got some sour cream in the freezer left over from something or other, and I'll use that - no need to worry about it separating in baked goods.
Of course, I'm still going to have to make some more yogurt, since I like the stuff and use it for all manners of things.
YOGURT MAKING - YOU KNEW I'D GET TO THAT EVENTUALLY.....
Making yogurt is incredibly easy. Heat milk to about 115 degrees. Add starter yogurt - some left from your previous batch, or half of cup of plain yogurt from whatever brand you usually buy (so long as it brags about live cultures). Keep the mix warm for a few hours. Poof! It's yogurt!
I'm going to rotate my dry milk for this. Since I mix the powder with hot water (it dissolves better that way) it will heat the milk in the same step. About 1 quart of warm milk, 1/2 cup of starter, tuck it into the hay box cooker, and ignore it till later today.
I'm VERY good at ignoring things.
Enjoy!

Quick Bean & Ham Soup
First it was hotter than usual for the month, then it got colder than usual. During the hotter time, my freezer was left slightly ajar (thanks, Spawn!). Did I mention that it was HUMID during the hot time?
At any rate, I had to defrost the freezer.
Defrosting the freezer I found amazing items I had not really focused on still being around. I found ham left over from Thanksgiving. I found kidney beans left over from SOMETHING or other. I found more beef stock than I thought I had in there. Having found them, and knowing that the weather was changing, I hauled them out and made soup.
I have GOT to stop feeding the freezer and letting things accumulate in it.
QUICK BEAN AND HAM SOUP
1 1/2 cups left over ham, cut in about 1/3 inch dice
2 cups left over beans, any type really. If using canned, rinse them well.
1 cup diced carrots
1 qt beef stock
1 qt chicken stock
Take a big ol' pot. Put a bit of fat in the bottom and saute' the carrots 'till crisp but cooked. Add rest of ingredients. Simmer. Adjust seasonings. Serve.
Makes about 8 servings.

Holy Liquid of All Life - coffee prices have jumped while I wasn't looking!
The Spawn went to Costco for me yesterday, as Costco is near his college. Among the other things I had him pick up was coffee since we've gone thru' most of the beans I had in storage. I was shocked at the bill - the coffee alone had gone up almost 15% since we had last bought it.
Why Was I Surprised?
I suppose I shouldn't have been. Maybe I've been suckered by all the recent chatter about deflation due to recession and all. At the very least, I'd not been following comodity prices lately.
Oh, I'd noticed that gas prices were up about 10% lately. Really up 33% over the lows gas hit last year. I'd noticed the jump in the price of oil. But I've not been watching other comodities.
It's a Finite Planet, Folks
I'd forgotten that this is a finite planet. I had become complacent. This has got to change, I have to go back to my paranoid .... er .... prepared ways.
Time for me to finally get the garden in. Even tho' I'm going to have to do it in the pollen (and the pollen led to the sinus and ear infection that stripped my will to blog over the past 10+ days). Time for me to grind my own flour again. Time for me to tell y'all all about it in vivid detail.
I'll bet y'all can't wait [grin]

Sabbat Energies
I'm still running-off-at-the-mind over Beltane, dates for Pagan High Days, and ideas about 'what and who) rituals are for'. I'm going to try to limit this post to most of the 'dates for High Days' issue
Unintended Consequences of My Ritual Date Setting
There is at least one unintended consequence of using local conditions as the basis for neoPagan High Day rituals. It will affect the amount of energy/unity on this plane for that ritual.
[Oh, Gods, this might expand to a discussion of raising energy vs tapping energy, too. Let us all hope I don't run-off-at-the-mind THAT much!]
Ever spend a season to a year making sure that you are deep in meditation at the EXACT TIME that the moon goes full and dark? Some of my friends and I have, and we've uniformly been able to tell the exact time of the shift in energies. The same ort of enery is available for the solar quarters (with quirks thrown in due to northern vs southern hemisphere issues). Astrological and astronomical based energies are strong and time-specific. OTOH, even with their strength they still are shaped by where you are on the earth - thus the strong Equinox energy is going to manifest totally differently north and south of the equator.
I'm not convinced that the astrological or astronomical energies are available for the cross quarters at all - I think that those high days work on a different power-grid.
But doing things based on local conditions means that the group mind and intent is lower due to just plain lower numbers of humans doing ritual and lighting up 'intention beacons' in the Other Worlds. If EVERY NeoPagan did their Samhain ritual the same night, at the same time, that would be some kick-ass energy. But we neopagans are a contentuous and squabbling lot, and we do most group celebrations at a time and date that is most convenient for most members of our groups - and most folks in the southern hemisphere are going to celebrate Beltane at that time. So at the VERY least Samhain gets celebrated over a 24 hour period - and really, it gets celebrated by small groups over a two-week period. That two week period is WITHOUT most neopagans celebrating it based on local conditions!
The Other Worlds don't have linear time as we do, so I'm not sure of the level of impact on THAT side. Ideally we're tapping into energy from the ancestors for our High Days and that energy has left huge trails on the Other Sides, so once there maybe we just travel down the well-worn way.
That said, I'm in a Wiccan tradition where at least one of our Elders (Ivo Dominguez, Jr) times rituals very carefully in accordance to astrological movements. When the coven I am in was having it's formal creation ritual we had an 8 minute window of opportunity to start the ritual in, between ... I THINK it was the end of a Mercury Retro and ... something else. I'd have to look it all up in the journal for that year, and I'm not doing that right now. But since we were manifesting something on THIS plane that was new to ALL the plane, and we were only the 5th or 6th coven in the Assembly of the Sacred Wheel, we weren't treading a very well-worn path. In cases like that trying to tie more things together, from all sources, is a Good Thing.
Buzzing on....
Okay, I AM going to go on a bit on Beltane and this Southern/Northern hemisphere thing. IF we decide dates of things by the calendar, AND we stay earth-focused, then the fact that it's Samhain in one hemisphere when it's Beltane in the other is enough to convince me that Beltane is 'another new year' day, AND that the veils MUST be thin then, too. I just can't see spiritual veils being thin ONLY in ONE hemisphere.
So, would Beltane be a good time to scry and see what we've planted will bring? Dunno! What say ye?
Catch you later!
